First Edition Battleship Board Game 1967: Who remembers playing this Battleship game? Did you know Milton Bradley's first Battleship game came out in 1931 as a pad-and-pencil game and in 1967 the board game version was released, (the one you see in the picture). The electronic version came out in 1977. Who still owns this game today?

Genealogy in a Jar - A Unique Gift.

Everyone LOVES a unique gift! So, I'm here to teach you how to make the "Genealogy in a Jar" for yourself or for a special person as a gift for; Christmas, Birthday's, Father's Day, Mother's Day, Family Reunions, Parties and more.

Supplies needed:

A Jar. You could use a mason jar, but my favorite is the Burken Jar w/lid from Ikea (37 oz. $3.99, 7" tall). Click link above to go to Ikea for a closer look.

Genealogy & family documents COPIES ONLY!! NEVER USE ORIGINAL DOCS

Pedigree Charts
Family Group Records
Birth Certificates
Marriage Certificates
Death Certificates
Census Records
Awards
Land Deeds
Anything you can think of

Photos : At least 3 or more. Use portrait style photos 4" wide by 6" tall. They will fit perfectly inside this jar. (I get my photos printed at Costco for only 13 cents a photo).

All of these family photos and documents fit inside my jar, plus I had room to spare.

Let's Begin:

Take your front photo and place in the jar, just bend a little so you can get it through the top. Once inside, the photo should fit perfectly in height around the contoured jar. The jar will fit 3, 4x6 photos going around. Note: The photos do not need to be taped to stay in place, the documents will hold them.
Next, place the Documents inside. Just like the photos, bend a little to contour the inside of the jar. Look how great it looks!!!

For the finishing touches, I used ribbon and rub on letters for my grandma's name.

You can also use stickers or vinyl for the name.

Wa-la!! You're done. Seriously, wasn't that a cinch? Your Christmas & Birthday shopping just got a lot easier and cheaper!!

Families Are Forever - Genealogy Means Everything!

I believe families are forever!! I believe after we leave this life on earth, we are united with loved ones who have passed on before us. I believe what is bound here on earth, is bound in heaven.

On March 13, 2006 my life changed forever; my oldest brother William Burnes died after a nine month battle with cancer. Only 39 years old, and at the peak of his life; building his dream home with his soon to be wife. A playful man who loved traveling, adventure, building, playing pranks, his cars and family history. During his battle, his sweetheart never left his side. She was determined to fight this horrific battle and get him recovered, but sadly recovery wasn't his life story. The veil of heaven was opened and he was greeted into heaven by his family. He was needed on the other side for a greater purpose that only God knows.

Death and regrets. The coping was hard because of the regrets I had from not spending more time with my brother. He was 10 years older than me, but I wish I could have created a deeper bond with him. However, since his passing, I feel closer to him now than ever before. I feel that he is close by. I have dreams of us talking and him joking around like he always did.

After Will's passing, I chose to honor him by picking up where he left off on his family history, and it was like the flood gates of knowledge had opened. At that point, I knew what part I was playing and my life became even more enriched. There is power in knowledge, but there is a deeper power in the knowledge of family.

Genealogy means everything to me!! I believe our ancestors want to be known. We are here today because of them. Let's pay it back and honor them by keeping them alive in us. Let's seek them out, grow our family tree, and "Connect The Dots".

Family History is Writing About The Crazy Times.

Family History Tip: Write about those crazy times!! I know at the time it's not very funny, but looking back on those crazy times, creates lasting memories and laughter.

Has your child done something like this? Mine has.

This happened only 3 days after my 5th child was born. My 3 year old and 1 year old thought it would be fun to tear open a 50 pound bag of flour and decorate the storage room. My 3 year old said "mom, it was a just like a sand box, but with flour".

Or Maybe something like this? Mine has.

"It's Snowflakes in my bedroom!" That's what my 5 year old told me. (Yes, the same one who tore open the 50 lb bag of flour). She saw it snowing outside and thought she could reenact this snowfall in her own bedroom; which she did. 2 toilet paper rolls later, and her bedroom looked a lot like outside. You can only see about 1/4 of the mess.

Tell your story now. What's something your child or children has done to "get into trouble"???

"You've Been Boo'd" Free Printables.

Life isn't all Family History for me. In fact, most of my life revolves around my 5 kidlets who love to stay busy doing crafts, projects and family activities. So, I thought I'd share one of our favorite Halloween Family traditions ; "You've Been Boo'd!" It's one of those traditions I do with my kids and husband every year in the month of October. We put together a candy filled Jack 'o lantern, per family ($1 at Walmart) with these 2 printables:

The note that says "You've Been Boo'd", with instructions to "Boo" someone new.
The adorable We've Been Boo'd sign to put in their window.

Now for the FUN part. Let your 5 giggly kids (in my case) take the candy filled Jack o' Lantern to someones doorstep and "DOORBELL DITCH". (ring the doorbell or knock, then run away). This year, we were a little adventurous and did this in the day. We did this for 3 different families on 3 different streets in our neighborhood so that each street got populated with Boo signs.

How to Use Google Maps To Track Your Ancestors Travels

I thought of an idea to track our ancestors travels using Google Maps. This could make a very unique gift, in very little time. Take a look at my map below.

Here's the Travel Map of my Burnes Ancestors, starting in Maryland in 1720,

and ending in Napa, CA in 1943

Go to www.google.com/maps
On the left under the Google logo, click on "Get Directions"
You will now see an "A" with a type box and a "B" with a type box. Click on the "A" Type Box and type the location of your oldest ancestor.
Click on the "B" Type box and click the next location that your ancestors traveled to.
Click on the "ADD DESTINATION" link under the "B" for as many times as needed.
Now you will see "C","D" "E" etc. Continue to add the next destinations to where your ancestors traveled to. NOTE: If you ever need to change the destinations around (Maybe "C" needs to be in the "A" position), simply drag the letter to that position and your map automatically updates.
Last, take a screen shot of this map by pushing the "PrtScn" button on your keyboard and save it to your hard drive.

That's it. Super easy right?? If you want to take it a step further, you can add, text of places and dates in either Photoshop or Microsoft Word and crop it like I have done on mine.

Remember to save this map by clicking the "MY PLACES" tab at the top next to get directions. then click on "CREATE MAP". Give it a title, then click the "DONE" tab.

Frame it for an amazing gift!!
