What is a Sexton?

SEXTON:   An employee or officer of a church who is responsible for keeping records of those buried in the cemetery, the care and upkeep of church property and sometimes for ringing bells and digging graves.

The word "Sexton" is said to be derived from the Anglo-Norman word "segerstein", which originated from the Latin word "sacristanus", which basically refers to "someone who looks after the sacred objects".
