"PRESIDENTS' DAY" was originally called "WASHINGTON'S BIRTHDAY", a federal holiday that began in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington. This was the first federal holiday to honor an American citizen and is still called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government. Traditionally, Presidents’ Day was celebrated on February 22; Washington’s actual birthday.

On January 1, 1971, the federal holiday changed to the third Monday in February by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, as an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. Presidents’ Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present.

The legend of Valentine’s Day goes back to 270 A.D., when the Roman Emperor Claudius II banned marriages and engagements because he decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families. However, a Holy Priest believed in love and took a dangerous stand to secretly perform marriages. His name just happened to be St. Valentine. Unfortunately, his actions were discovered by the Emperor and St. Valentine, the defender of love and marriage, was found guilty and imprisoned with the ultimate threat of death as punishment for his deeds. While in prison, St. Valentine fell in love with the jailor’s daughter. As he was being taken away to be executed he left his true love a love note signed, “Love, your Valentine”.
St. Valentine was executed on February 14, around 270 A.D.

Side note: There are three different Valentines in history executed for defending their beliefs.

The American Actress Grace Kelly became Princess Grace of Monaco when she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco on April 18, 1956 in the Palace throne room of Monaco. She and Rainier had 3 children:

• Caroline Louise Marguerite, Princess of Hanover, born January 23, 1957, and now heiress presumptive to the throne of Monaco
• Albert II, Prince of Monaco, born March 14, 1958, current ruler of the Principality of Monaco
• Princess Stéphanie Marie Elisabeth, born February 1, 1965.

Princess Grace died at the age of 52 on September 14, 1982 from a stroke she had while driving with her daughter Stephanie. The stroke caused a severe car accident and she died the following day; her daughter survived. Prince Rainier of Monaco never remarried and was buried alongside her in the Grimaldi family vault following his death in 2005.
